Join us for the September 2026 meetup of the Space Association of Australia – all welcome!  Date: Monday, 28 September 2026 Time: 6:30 - 9:00 pm AEST Venue: Bentleigh RSL, 538 Centre Road, Bentleigh, VIC Chasing the fastest astrophysical explosions in the Universe with Dr Natasha Van Bemmel, Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University Abstract: When we look up at the sky, it appears static and unchanging; however, this is far from the truth. By watching the Universe carefully over time, we see that it is largely dynamic and is teeming with "transient" phenomena that can appear and disappear on timescales of weeks, days, or even seconds. These highly energetic transient events are commonly associated with the violent deaths of stars and collisions between the densest objects in the Universe, and produce energy across the entire spectrum, from high-energy neutrinos and optical light to radio waves, to even gravitational waves. I will discuss the novel programmes I have been involved in throughout my PhD to observe these fast transients occurring in real time, and the methods I developed to identify the needle of interesting events in the haystack of interloping variable objects.
