Date: Monday, 28 September 2026
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 pm AEST
Venue: Bentleigh RSL, 538 Centre Road, Bentleigh, VIC
Abstract:
When we look up at the sky, it appears static and unchanging; however, this is far from the truth. By watching the Universe carefully over time, we see that it is largely dynamic and is teeming with "transient" phenomena that can appear and disappear on timescales of weeks, days, or even seconds. These highly energetic transient events are commonly associated with the violent deaths of stars and collisions between the densest objects in the Universe, and produce energy across the entire spectrum, from high-energy neutrinos and optical light to radio waves, to even gravitational waves. I will discuss the novel programmes I have been involved in throughout my PhD to observe these fast transients occurring in real time, and the methods I developed to identify the needle of interesting events in the haystack of interloping variable objects.
Note: This is an in-person event in Melbourne only; there will be no live stream.
The usual RSL sign-in rules apply (e.g. scan driver's licence) to enter the venue.
There is off-street car parking behind the RSL building — enter from Arthur Street. The entry from the car park is for members only. The public entry is from Centre Road.
Alternate off-street parking may be found in front of the Woolworths next door — enter from Centre Road, or behind the Bentleigh Library — enter from Jasper Road.
The Bentleigh RSL is a few hundred metres east of Bentleigh Station on the Frankston Line. Also, smart buses run along Centre Road.
